SEVEN YEARS · NAACP
Every August, I turn a Detroit park into a festival. The kids go home ready for the first day.
Back to School, Stay in School Rally.
The Work
For seven years I have run the branch's Back to School rally. Hundreds of book bags a year, filled, not empty. 200 to 600 kids through the gates. Free food, a game truck, music, and a park that feels like a block party instead of a supply line.
The point was never just the backpack. A parent who was doing the math on whether they could cover the supply list walks out of that park with one less thing to carry. The kid walks in the first day looking like everybody else. That is the whole thing. You take a day that puts families under stress and you make it the best day of the summer.
